Pottery Wheel Classes in Munger Place

Working on a pottery wheel involves several stages:

Clay preparation. The clay should be soft and plastic enough to shape easily. It can be mixed with water to achieve the right consistency.

Centering the clay. The potter places the clay on the wheel and centers it, giving it an even shape so it can rotate smoothly with minimal resistance.

Shaping the piece. The potter uses hands and tools to form the clay into the desired shape. This process may include bending, pulling, and other manipulations.

Drying. After shaping, the piece needs to dry until it becomes firm enough for further work. This can take several days.

Firing. Once dry, the piece is fired in a kiln at a high temperature, which makes it strong and durable.

Decorating and glazing. After firing, the potter can decorate and glaze the piece, adding both durability and visual appeal.
